THE Kwara State Government has closed
down Kwara State Polythecnic until further notice following the unrest
caused by the killing of an Accountancy Department student of the
institution.
The ND II student was killed on Monday by gunshots from a Police Officer, who was part of the escort of a bullion van, belonging to one of the leading banks operating in the Capital city.
Although, the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command said that the suspected Police officer has been arrested, and would be duly made to face justice, the students
continued their protests today, in Ilorin, while gun-totting mobile
police and burning tyres could be seen along the axis of Post-Office,
Challenge, Wahab Folawiyo etc.
While some part of Sabo-Oke, Maraba also
witnessed unrest, causing fear among residents, and crippling economic
activities in the Metropolis.
IN a dramatic twist to the whole saga, the authority of the Kwara State Polytechnic has confirmed the shooting of a taxi in which one of its students, Ahmed Dayo of the Department of Accounting (ND 1) was incidentally hit by bullet in the leg.
According to the statement made available to newsmen by the institution’s Public Relation Officer, Mr Abdulkadri Yunus, the student is said to be alive and sound contrary to some media report that the student is dead, noting that his condition is stable as he is being promptly attended to by medical experts at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).
The authority of the polytechnic therefore appealed to the students
to be calm as necessary actions are being taken to maintain peace and
order, stressing that the authority of the institution will do its best
to protect the lives and property of the students.
It would be recalled that commercial and social activities were yesterday paralyzed in Ilorin metropolis following protest by students of the Kwara State Polytechnic whose colleague was allegedly shot by police escort of one of the leading banks.
MEANWHILE, Banks also closed shop to customers, with hordes of them found at the entrance of the banks, trying to transact business, taking cognizance of the fact that tomorrow is Democracy Day.
As at the time of writing this report, several customers were apprehensive about how they will be able to withdraw money.
An eye witness (name withheld) said some of the security officials of the banks saw this as an opportunity to extort money from desperate customers.
A visit to one of the leading first
generation bank located just before A Division revealed that some of the
customers had to part with N100 or N200 notes, if they want to gain
access into the banking hall.
